Congratulations to 2x champion of the Icons of Foam, Roger Hinds.
The focal exhibit of The Boardroom Show, The Icons of Foam is a shaping competition where 6 shapers attempt to replicate a given surfboard design in a strictly designed 90 minute window. This year Roger Hinds defended his title against Chris Christenson, Tim Stamps, Ward Coffey, Stu Kenson, and Dave Parmenter to recreate Rusty’s famous ’84 Occy model thruster. Rusty and his son, Clint, served as the judges of the finished, unmarked and thereby anonymously shaped blanks.
Each shaper was given an opportunity to measure the board prior to shaping. Once shaping commenced, they could only feel the board, but no longer measure. Here Dave Parmenter dials in the final numbers.
In the end, Rusty said the winner was chosen based on the accuracy of the intricate detail in the last 3rd of the bottom of the shape. Here Ward Coffey pulls precise measurements.
The entire exhibition takes place in a glass walled shaping bay so that attendees can watch every moment. (Christenson on the left and Kenson on the right).
Christenson invited a local grom in the bay to take a few passes on the planer.
Roger Hinds won last year’s tribute to Ben Aipa by replicating Button’s famous Sting. This year featured an entirely different board design, but Hinds showed his prowess and defended his title.
Ward Coffey’s finished shape. The design featured a double to single concave with slight vee through the tail.
